Romanian cross-border e-commerce is projected to grow by 17%.
Romania's e-commerce trade volume is expected to continue to grow, with a report from the e-commerce platform VTEX (Romania) predicting an annual growth rate of at least 17% this year, providing a strong growth environment for domestic brands and e-commerce sellers considering developing in Romania.
Romania's rapid digital development is directly impacting traditional retail, with more and more businesses shifting online. According to Christine Movira, head of VTEX Eastern Europe, in an interview, VTEX has about 100 online stores in the Romanian market, receiving more than 1,000 orders every day. However, it is expected that the number of these online stores will roughly double in the next three years.
In 2020, only 43% of Romanian internet users aged 16-74 shopped online, which is significantly lower than the EU average of 75%. However, in 2019, this figure was only 24%. Back in 2015, less than 21% of Romanian internet users shopped online.
During the pandemic, Romania experienced a significant leap in online retail sales, with e-commerce usage nearly doubling in 2020, leading to a surge in online shopping penetration. While this initial figure may not be large, it demonstrates the immense potential of Romanian e-commerce platforms within the broader European e-commerce market.
According to data from the Romania insider website (Romania insider.com), Romanian residents' online shopping preferences are concentrated in categories such as fashion apparel and accessories, electronic products, books, home decor items, and beauty and personal care products. They also pay close attention to the cost-effectiveness of products when shopping online.
