What is the Romanian e-commerce platform market like? Is it a viable business opportunity?

E-commerce is developing rapidly in Europe. Besides major markets like the UK, France, and Germany, Romania, a niche market, is also worth noting. Data shows that Romania has approximately 19.1 million people, of whom 19 million use the internet, with about 70% shopping online (23.46%). Therefore, there are significant opportunities in Romanian e-commerce.

Currently, Romania also has several major e-commerce platforms:

1.eMAG
Founded in 2001, eMAG is Romania's largest online shopping platform, primarily targeting the Eastern European market. Currently, its business spans Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Italy, and other countries, while also expanding into other European markets. It receives 28.1 million monthly visits and currently has 22,800 sellers, including Chinese sellers.
Currently, the eMAG platform's traffic primarily comes from direct search. On emag.ro, search and social media are the most prevalent traffic sources, accounting for 50.60% and 2.77% respectively. Notably, Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp Webapp are the top three social media traffic sources.

2.Okazii.ro
Founded in 2000, Okazii.ro is a well-known e-commerce platform in Romania. Initially focusing on used car transactions, it later expanded to include electronics, clothing, books, and sporting goods. The website offers over 3,000 product categories daily, receives over 3 million monthly visits, and connects with more than 2,000 stores. 90.12% of Okazii.ro's traffic comes from Romania; therefore, sellers should pay particular attention to the consumption habits of Romanian users.

3、 Cel
Launched in early 2018, cel boasts 1,800 registered partners and over 1 million listed products. In 2020, its sales grew by more than 500%, with partners on the Marketplace alone receiving 15,000 orders per month. In terms of platform traffic, cel receives approximately 2 million monthly visits, primarily concentrated in Romania (93.35%). This data is similar to that of another Romanian e-commerce platform, Okazii.

Overall, competition among Romanian e-commerce platforms is quite fierce. Of course, this blue ocean market also has great potential for development. If you want to get involved, you should consider which platform is more suitable for you and will have a greater advantage.
